Giants of Late Summer

September 12, 2019

Summer in Florida certainly has it’s challenges, but finding big trophy fish isn’t one them. Sharks, Tarpon, Snook, Goliaths, Redfish etc, they are all feeding aggressively now. There is too much content to go over in one post, so I will be adding other posts soon to tackle giant snook ,overslot redfish, and tarpon individually. The main point here is….now is the time for the wall-hangers.

We have been focusing our efforts inside Tampa Bay, where water temps are in the upper 80’s all summer long. Bull sharks are the main big shark that we target, but smaller blacktips are super fun sport as well. The bulls are generally taken on dead mullet or the like, while the blacktips seem to be a sucker for a big live pinfish under a balloon. Heavy stranded cable leaders are a must to land these bruisers. We look for areas that transition from one depth, such as shallow flat, to another such as a nearby deep channel.

Check back for our subsequent posts on the other big 3 species in the coming weeks including a detailed special on getting that big snook.

Tight lines.
